Bok Tower Gardens

While visiting family in Florida over the holidays, I had a chance to tour and photograph at theĀ amazing Bok Tower Gardens!

Bok Tower Gardens (also known as Bok Mountain Lake Sanctuary and Singing Tower) is a botanical garden and bird sanctuary, located north of Lake Wales, Florida. It has a beautiful 250-acre garden, a giant 205-foot tall Singing Tower, several walking trails, the Pinewood Estate (which you can take a tour of), and a visitor center.

The tower, with its melodeous carillon bells, is builtĀ on top ofĀ Iron Mountain, one of the highest points of peninsular Florida, estimated to be 295 feet above sea level. Bok Tower Gardens is a National Historic Landmark that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I spent the morning enjoying the wildlife and the natural setting. Since it was an overcast day, I focused most of my attention on macro photography. But I did happen upon a beautiful wedding ceremony and couldn’t help snapping a few of that as well. šŸ™‚Ā  Later, the rest of the family joined me, with Linda (who works at the gardens) leading us in a very nice tour.

If you’re ever in the Orlando area, I highly recommend a side trip to Bok Tower Gardens!

Jenny & Nate’s Kind Review

Jenny & Nate absolutely made my day with this kind review on WeddingWire:

“I hired Chris after meeting with several local photographers who I just could not get the warm and fuzzy feeling from. Pictures are extremely important to me; more so than most elements of the wedding and I knew it would take just the right person to capture our day. We wanted someone who had a creative eye, the courage to try something different, the patience to deal with our silly demands, and the ability to listen to our non-artistic description of what we wanted and make our vision come true. We found just that in Chris & Cami Photography. Not only were the pictures beyond anything that I ever could have imagined, Chris had them to me by the time we got back from our honeymoon! He is an amazingly talented, creative, kind person who knows what you want without even YOU knowing! He doesn’t watch the clock, waiting for your photo shoot to be over; he truly loves what he does and it comes across in not only his communication with you, but his quality of work. The most amazing pictures on the most amazing day of my life. Chris, I couldn’t have found a better photographer to capture this day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. These pictures mean more to me than you will ever know.”

United Soccer Stars

Cami’s niece, Kristin, is a rising star in the Under 16 travel soccer league. This week, her team is playing in a tournament at the ESPN Soccer complex in Orlando. So Cami & I came down to watch her play and be with her family for the New Year Celebration!!!

Of course I couldn’t resist shooting a few photos of one of the games. šŸ™‚ Kristin is that feisty #9.

Chrissy’s Boudoir Session

You may have heard of one of the latest trends in wedding photography. Boudoir photography is definitely gaining popularity among to-be brides. In 2013, it’s estimated that 12% of brides added a boudoir session for their lucky man to their wedding package.

So what’s it really all about? To us, it’s not about nudity or sexuality…it’s about love, commitment, empowerment, and the ultimate celebration of who you are…your uniqueness and inner beauty…the power of your individuality…and the unconditional gift of yourself to your betrothed.

Chrissy, one of my all-time favorite brides, hired us for her destination wedding in Chicago, and was kind enough to give me permission to share a few of her beautiful, elegant, and classy boudoir images with this post. But rather than re-write what was already been so eloquently written by Kate Wood, I share with you herĀ excellent article on TheKot:

So, what is boudoir photography exactly?
Boudoir photography is a sexy new trend that’s especially popular as a wedding day gift from a bride to her groom. Boudoir photos are usually taken wearing either just a little, or well, nothing at all. They’re hardly X-rated though, but rather PG-13 — as in classic pinup-inspired pics, or what the pros call ‘implied nudes.’ That means you’re not wearing anything, but you’re also not showing off anything either (think shot from the back, or lying on your stomach).

Who will take my pictures?
Many wedding photographers have embraced this trend — your shutterbug may offer this as an additional service. An added bonus of going with a pro: Many brides like to have the best of their boudoir photos bound in a mini album just for their hubby, a service many wedding photographers are able to arrange. In some cities, you may also be able to find services that specialize in boudoir photography. While the shots you get may not be as high quality as those of a high-end wedding photographer, there can be other perks –like closets full of potential wardrobe items or props.

When should I schedule the session?
If you’re spending time and money on an exercise and beauty routine, you may want to wait until a week or so before the wedding to show off the results. Plus, a fun and pampering photo shoot is a good way to indulge and take some time out from wedding planning. Though you might be inclined arrange for the session on the morning of your wedding, resist the urge. For one, you’re not likely to feel very sultry if the rain clouds looming over your outdoor ceremony site are the first thing on your mind. Second, do you really want your to-be mother-in-law walking in on you while you’re posing in just your veil? Stick with a separate shoot so you’ll have time to really feel comfortable and get some great shots.

How long does it take?
Though it depends on the package you choose, your boudoir photo session will probably last about two hours. Why so long? It takes time for hair and makeup, plus the additional lighting setup. It may also take you a little while to relax. Most brides aren’t used to lounging around wearing little, if any, clothing in front of the camera, so your first few shots will likely look a bit stiff.

What does it cost?
Cost varies considerably — do a little investigating before you commit to a vision of what you want. Multiple set changes, renting props, or simply time spent can add up quickly. If you can add a private session onto your wedding package, you may be able to get a better deal than if you go with a different wedding photographer. The real key, of course, is whether you gel with your photographer — if you don’t feel comfortable, it will show on camera.

Where should I have it done?
Talk with your photographer to come up with the best location. Many photographers may be able to do a photo session in a studio. Another popular site is a posh hotel room. Your own home or a borrowed home is another option. The main key is to get an okay from your photographer on the locale — a number of different backgrounds for poses are important, and they’ll also need lots of natural light.

What should I wear?
The most important thing — choose outfits that make you feel sexy. A good rule of thumb: Bring something white, something black, and something in a bright color so you can mix and match. A corset will create sexy curves. In addition to lingerie, don’t forget shoes, jewelry, and that engagement ring.

Should I bring anyone along?
Though you don’t want to turn your shoot into a three-ring circus, it’s a good idea to bring a friend. Why? You’ll feel more at ease if you can make a few jokes with a pal, plus she may be able to help with suggestions. Another idea: Bring a bottle of bubbly. A little champagne may help loosen things up. You’ll be posing like a pro in no time — but of course, this is a one-time-only exclusive for a very special audience (your very lucky groom).

World No8 Jelena Jankovic Enters Family Circle Cup

Her friendly demeanor and vibrant personality make Jelena Jankovic…or “JJ” as everyone calls her on the tour…one of my favorite players to photograph. Intense when she’s on the court, JJ is always laughing and joking around when she’s off it. Here’s a candid I shot of her during the Player Party last year at NV Lounge.

PRESS RELEASE:
Jelena Jankovic, World No. 8 and 2007 Family Circle Cup Champion,
has officially entered the 2014 tournament. Jankovic joins World No. 1 and defending
champion, Serena Williams, in a first-class player field assembling on Daniel Island. Marking
the tournament’s 42nd consecutive year, the Family Circle Cup is scheduled March 29 – April 6,
2014 at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, SC.
Jankovic had a resurgent 2013 season, ending it as a semi-finalist in the WTA Championships.
Beginning the year outside the top 20, she finished the season in the top 10, at No. 8. Jankovic
quietly began her reappearance at the top of women’s tennis in February, when she collected
her 13th WTA Tour title in Bogota. After her title run, her on-court confidence translated to a
finals appearance in Charleston and a quarterfinal showing in Rome.
Using her trademark speed and clay court prowess, Jankovic also booked a spot in the Roland
Garros quarterfinal, marking her first return to the final eight of a Grand Slam since 2010. She
then finished in the semifinals in Nurnberg and Cincinnati before making it to the finals in
Beijing, and booking an elite eight spot at the WTA Championships.
ā€œJelena Jankovicā€˜s 2013 season has made for some thrilling tennis matches to watch,ā€ said
Eleanor Adams, Family Circle Cup Tournament Manager. ā€œHer personality draws fans in, but
her powerhouse tennis skills are what makes them continue to cheer for her. The Family Circle
Cup is excited to welcome Jelena back, at the top of her game, to Charleston for the tenth time.ā€
Jankovic has made nine previous appearances in Charleston, where she holds an 18-8 record
and the 2007 singles title. Throughout the Serbian’s 14-year WTA career, she has accumulated
13 singles titles, 530 singles victories, more than $15.3 million in prize money and a World No. 1
ranking in 2008.
ā€œThe Family Circle Cup is such a special tournament to me, and I always have so much fun in
Charleston,ā€ said Jankovic. ā€œI’m already looking forward to being back there this spring; the
tournament has the greatest fans, and I’m excited for another shot at its historic title.ā€

American Sloan Stevens Commits to the Family Circle Cup

I’ll be photographing the tournament again in 2014…my 13th year covering the event, and 9th as the official photographer. Tickets available now at www.familycirclecup.com!Ā  I hope you’ll join me!!!

PRESS RELEASE:
Sloane Stephens, World No. 12, has committed to the 2014 Family Circle Cup, March 29th – April 6th in Charleston, SC. Twenty-year-old Stephens is currently the youngest player in the top 20 WTA rankings.

The 2014 Family Circle Cup will mark her fourth appearance in Charleston. She joins former Cup champions Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic in the player field.

The young American hopeful began her rise to the top of women’s tennis with a breakthrough 2013 season, which saw her go 15-4 in Grand Slam play, reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open. Stephens’ biggest victory of the season came from the same tournament, where she defeated 17-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, marking Serena’s first career loss to a younger American.

Stephens made the 4th round or better at all Grand Slams in 2013, appearing in the 4th round at Roland Garros, quarterfinal at Wimbledon and the 4th round at the U.S. Open.

ā€œSloane performed so well this season, and really proved what she is capable of doing on the court,ā€ said Eleanor Adams, Tournament Manager. ā€œShe is a star in the making, and our fans will have the chance to see that firsthand. The Family Circle Cup is known for introducing new champions, and this could be Sloane’s year.ā€

Beginning the season at World No. 38 in Brisbane, Stephens set a career-high ranking in October at World No. 11. Her determination led to the WTA Championships in Istanbul, where she served as an alternate alongside former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

ā€œThis past season showcased all of the hard work I put in,ā€ said Stephens. ā€œI’m looking forward to returning to the Family Circle Cup in 2014, and playing in Charleston once again. I love the city and its fans, so it will be great to be back for a fourth year.ā€

Jenny & Nate’s Awendaw Wedding

Jenny is a gorgeous bride who is super intelligent, very organized, and did a LOT of research on photographers before picking us. I was truly humbled and honored when she told me that!

Nate is a retired cage fighter, has lots of tattoos, has a motorcycle and loves to fish. Jenny once told me, “my fiance is absolutely the coolest person I know”!!!

Jenny & Nate like to do different things like go to the Ladson Flea Market, hunting for treasures, playing games at Blackbeard’s Cove, or grilling out in their favorite place…the garage! They are definitely not your cookie cutter kind of couple…which is what I love the most about these guys!

Their wedding was held at her dad’s amazing home in Awendaw. Cindy at Engaging Events did a fabulous job of decorating the plact to perfection. The wet weather couldn’t damp anyone’s excitement, and everyone had an AMAZING time! Jenny was absolutely stunning in her gown. And Nate was too cool for school with his designer socks. šŸ™‚

The ceremony was a reverent, chandelier-lit event, punctated by poignent and humerous remarks from Pastor Brooks. The reception was a non-stop rush from beginning to end, with the musical gang Loose Chain fueling the energy that permeated the evening air. It truly was a night to remember!!!

CONGRATULATIONS Jenny & Nate! May God bless you as you begin your new journey together!!!

AM Conservation Group – Company Christmas Party

Photographing corporate events is a lot of fun. Photographing company Christmas parties is even MORE fun!!! šŸ™‚

Last weekend Cami & I had the privilege of photographing this holiday party for the AM Conservation Group. (Many thanks to our friends Gary & Amy at Coleman Photography for the kind referral!)Ā  This organization, known as “Home of the best buys on conservation supplies” was founded in 1989. The goal – to become a service oriented source for a full line of high quality, competitively priced weatherization, water and energy conservation products, kits and programs. The company moved from New Jersey to a new green distribution facility and corporate headquarters in sunny Charleston, where they have continued to grow and offer an even greater selection of conservation products & services ever since!

During the cocktail hour we photographed couples and group photos in fron of the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. While I was shooting, Cami was editing and printing the images to be given as gifts later in the evening. Next we photographed a new company photo at the base of the beautiful staircase. During dinner there were several awards, candid photos, presentations, and even a great message from the company president through the use of a magic trick!

By the time dinner was over, Cami had finished printing the 5×7 Christmas photos, and slipped them into a nice elegant folder for each couple. As we walked around handing out photos during their dessert, everyone loved the instant gratification of receiving their gifts to take home with them that night!

If you’d like to book us for your holiday party, awards banquet, or corporate event…just let us know. It would be an honor and a pleasure to work with you!

Holly & Joel’s St. Lucia Portrait Session

While getting some much-needed R&R after a very busy fall wedding season, Cami & I met Holly & Joal on the shores in front of our resort.

Joel’s family is originally from Portugal, but he and Holly are actually from New York. We had a great time getting to know them, and offered to shoot a few portraits of them. I mean look at these guys!!! How could we resist photographing such a striking couple on the picturesque grounds of the Sandals Grande St. Lucia, with that gorgeous view of the sunset over the Caribbean?!? šŸ™‚

Many thanks to our new friends for being such great sports, and such amazing models!

Caldwell Commercial in White Point Gardens

Caldwell Commercial has been one of my favorite clients since their early beginnings! I firmly believe you just can’t find more talented, honest, dependable, and trustworthy folks in the industry!!! Here are a few from our shoot the other morning at White Point Gardens…complete with their new employee, “Barry the Horse”, who stopped by to pose with the team. šŸ™‚

Focus on the Fun!

Why is there such a huge mis-conseption among executives and business folks that having their head-shots done is going to be a painful experience?!?

Maybe that’s because photographers often get too wrapped up in the “how” and forget to focus on the “why”! To me, photographing an executive at South Carolina Federal Credit Union is no different than photographing my best friend. I arrive early, set up all the equipment, and get the “technical” out of the equation. That way when they arrive, I can treat them like a real person instead of a lab rat!
I may only have 15 minutes with them out of their busy schedule. But in that 15 minutes, I treat them like I would want to be treated…like a real, live, fellow human being on planet earth! Where is the common ground? We both have parents, we may have grown up with siblings, we’ve worked in “corporate America”, we enjoy living in Charleston, we’ve loved a pet, we might be married, we’re passionate about a sport…so many common experiences, emotions, insecurities, and accomplishments that we can relate to!

Once we get to chatting and getting to know each other, we forget about the “picture taking”, and focus on the fun! THAT, my friends, is when the best expressions and true portraits are made!!!

Lightbending with Alison

I had really enjoyable Lightbending session with Alison Stanfield and her assistant last month! She’s a phenomenal photographer. Check out her work at http://alisonstanfield.smugmug.com. But she mostly works with natural light and wanted to expand her repertoir by mastering her off-camera flash techniques.

Since she’s already such an accomplished photographer, she didn’t need the full session to be about shooting. So together we tailored a program around her. We spent the first half of the session at our home studio, where I shared all our image management and backup procedures, delved into Adobe Lightroom editing techniques, and went over best business practices.

Then it was time to go “play”! We had previously arranged with the wonderful folks at Runnymede Plantation to use their beautiful venue for the shooting portion of the program. This is a gorgeous private shouthern plantation on the edge of the Ashley River with a giant oak tree and old plantation ruins. Check out www.eventsatrunnymede.com for more details. We had a great time working with the off-camera flashes and photographing Alison’s sister who had come to model for us!

If you’re interested in taking your photography to the next level, don’t hesitate to sign up for one of these Private Mentor Sessions. They are limited to one per month. So call early! I look forward to working with you…
