Brickyard Plantation for Seamon Whiteside

I learned a lot while photographing Brickyard Plantation for Seamon Whiteside this week. I had no idea there was so much history in this Mt. Pleasant neighborhood!

“Brickyard Plantation is a portion of the vast Boone Hall Plantation. The soils that cover much of the tract contain dense red clay and sand making it suitable for brick production. In 1817, a plantation with a Brick Yard established thereon called Boon Hall was purchased by John and Henry Horlbeck. The brothers were partners in the construction industry having built several notable structures in Charleston such as the St John’s Lutheran Church and St. Stephen’s Chapel. The Horlbecks developed the brick yard into a major enterprise. From 1850 to 1860, twenty five million bricks were produced at a profit of $170,000. The brick yard operated throughout the nineteenth century and was later known as the Horlbeck Brick and Tile Company. The facility consisted of several kilns, workshops, drying areas, a brick lined cistern, a commissary, and a steam boiler.”

Only one of the boiler’s brick chimneys is left standing today. It’s the only one of its kind in the area, and is beautifully preserved in the back of the neighborhood.

Creative Architectural Design and Superior Construction

Elizabeth and Greg Allen are not only partners in life, they have created one of the most incredible partnerships in home building that the lowcountry has ever seen!  Check them out at https://charlestonarchitects.com/.

An award-winning architect, Elizabeth’s creative concepts and problem-solving skills have made her one of the most highly sought-after designers of custom homes and renovations in Charleston. At the same time, her husband Greg has risen through the ranks by repeatedly going above and beyond his client’s expectations, placing him on the top tier of home builders in town. By working together, they are able to provide custom options nobody else is offering in the market.  Their attention to detail and level of quality is simply stellar!  Plus their incredibly efficient system, and the amazing team they’ve assembled around them, are able to deliver projects in record-breaking time.

It was an absolute honor to be able to photograph a few of their amazing projects last week!

The Seabrook Island Club

We’ve had a string of unbelievably beautiful days this last week. The weather was absolutely perfect for my shoot at the Seabrook Island Club yesterday!

I was there to photograph the newly renovated facility for Trident Construction. Founded right here in Charleston back in 1981, Trident Construction provides construction services in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Their incredible team has repeatedly earned the trust of their clients, subcontractors and design professionals by working collaboratively and diligently on every project they tackle! Check them out at www.tridentconstruction.com.

Many thanks to Elizabeth & Bo for all their hard work scheduling and coordinating this shoot!

Center Pointe Apartments for Novus Architects

I’ve been enjoying some challenging yet rewarding assignments from Novus Architects recently.

The latest request was for some updated photos of Center Pointe Apartments that showcase the grand scope of the project. Normally a great way to do that is from the air. So I would typically recommend incorporating drone shots. However, this apartment complex is sandwiched between Tanger Outlets and the Boeing plant…directly in the approach-path of incoming aircraft for runway 33 at the Charleston International Airport!

Being an FAA certified drone pilot, I knew the drone was out. However, I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help me gain elevation and create shots that look like I’m hovering several feet off the ground. With my “angel cam” in tow (also dubbed the world’s longest selfie-stick), I was able to take my Nikon D850 with the 14-24 f2.8 Nikkor lens attached and raise it several stories into the air to get exactly the perspective I needed!

It was a beautiful day and the shots came out great. 🙂

Interior Design Photos for Sandy Ericksen

It’s always a pleasure working with Sandra Ericksen Design! We had so much fun yesterday photographing some of her beautiful arrangements and creative concepts. Although normally preferring to stay behind the camera, I even got a portraits of Sandy. If you’re looking for a fantastic interior designer who is an absolute pleasure to work with, check her out at www.sandraericksendesign.com!

Aerial Photos for Trident Construction

I love my job!!! Sometimes I get to do the coolest assignments.

Yesterday I got to photograph aerial photos for one of my favorite clients, Trident Construction. I’ve done a lot of aerial photos for them with my drone. But we needed a few shots from a higher perspective than the drone legally allows. So we went flying in a helicopter!

Many thanks to Robert at Fly in Helicopters for setting us up, to our pilot Randy for an exceptional flight, and to Elizabeth for helping coordinate and direct the shoot!

Firefly Distillery for Trident Construction

What a fun coincidence!!! Cami joined some friends for a fun night of music during the Safe Sounds Concert Series at the Firefly Distillery Saturday night. They enjoyed “20 Ride: A Tribute to Zac Brown Band and Natty Grass”. Check it out at www.fireflydistillery.com.

I was bummed that I had a photo shoot and couldn’t join them that evening. But then on Monday morning, I got to photograph the very same new Firefly Distillery for Trident Construction! How cool is that?!? For more information on this awesome team, visit www.tridentconstruction.com.

Many thanks to Elizabeth for all her hard work organizing everything!

Interior/Architecture Assignment for Holiday Inn Express

Last week I had a fun assignment, photographing the Holiday Inn Express at the Harbison location in Columbia. Many thanks to Dexter and Kristi at Naman Hotels for trusting me with another one of their awesome photo shoots!

Washington DC Architecture

Last month, Cami and I had a wonderful time photographing Matt & Caroline’s destination wedding in Turf Valley, VA.

Since we flew into Washington D.C. to get there, we decided to take an extra day to “play tourist” in our country’s capital on the way home. Here are a few architectural studies I did while we visited the many sights.

All images shot with Nikon D810 and Nikkor 16-35 f4 VR.

Interior, Architecture, and Landscaping for Solaris Inc

My amazingly talented friends at Solaris Inc just did a major sun-room addition to a beautiful home I shot for them a couple years ago. It was so much fun to go back and see all the changes!

Interior and architecture photography presents a very unique set of challenges. Figuring out the perfect angles, solving the issues of glare and reflection in the windows, and slowing down the photographic process to truly capture the “feel” of a space are all a part of what I enjoy so much about interior and architectural photography!
