Lincoln’s Bat Mitzvah

Congregation Emanu-El (and many other synagogues) restricts photos during Mitzvah ceremonies primarily to maintain focus, reverence, and sanctity of the religious service. It’s a way of preventing distractions for the family, clergy, and community…and ensuring the Bat Mizvah feels present. For these reasons, most congregagions allow dedicated photo sessions before the service for professional photos.

With Lincoln’s Mitzvah coming up this weekend, I joined her and her family on Friday evening for one of these photo sessions. We met at Emanu-El, where the beautiful campus offers tons of great spots for family portraits, as well as portraits of Lincoln in her elegant black dress. As the sun began to set, we went inside to meet up with Rabbi Ravski, who graciously gave us access to the sanctuary where I could get shots of Lincoln while she practiced her speach and read from the Torah.

It was a lot of fun getting to know Lincoln and her family! It was an honor capturing these special moments for them. And I can’t wait to finish editing and sharing the photos from her party on Saturday!!! 🙂

Eva’s Bat Mizvah Reception at the Segra Club at Riley Park

After Eva’s heartfelt Bat Mitzvah ceremony at KKBE Synagogue, we all reconnected at the Segra Club at Riley Park, which is a really cool event venue at The Joe baseball stadium. Perched above Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, enclosed by glass walls with unparalleled views of the Ashley River marsh and the home field of the Charleston RiverDogs, this was the perfect location to celebrate such a special day for Eva and her family!

Arriving early to capture some detail and drone shots, I then met up with Eva and her family for a few family portraits before guests arrived. Victoria, the event manager at Segra Club, gave us exclusive access to the field and the dugout for some really cool shots! Returning to the event space, beautifully decorated by Sha Sha at Loluma, it was so much fun to see the excitement on everyone’s faces as they began arriving. Soon the place was packed with an air of excitement, love, and friendship!

After a warm introduction and welcome by Eva’s parents, the Segra Club’s kitchen opened up some incredibly tasty food stations. Betsey from Pop the Bubbly Events did an awesome job keeping everyone organized and on-schedule. And Josh from Charleston Event Pros cranked the tunes and kept the party rockin’ all night long! My favorite part came when he turned up “Hava Nagilah”, kicking off the traditional circle dance, before Eva and her family were hoisted up into the air one by one on a chair. The Hora is a symbolic tradition that celebrates the Bat Mitzvah, expressing everyone’s joy and support for Eva!!!

CONGRATULATIONS Eva!!! This evening truly was an amazing celebration of your life, and the beautiful young woman you have become…

Eva’s Bat Mizvah at KKBE Synagogue

I had the absolute pleasure of capturing Eva’s bat mitzvah at the beautiful KKBE Synagogue in downtown Charleston this weekend. From the moment I arrived, the vibrant energy and joyful spirit of the celebration were contagious.

I met up with Eva and her family early that morning to capture a few family portraits and individual shots of Eva. She was beautifully dressed in a lovely blue floral pattern. Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue has a gorgeous old historic campus with great backdrops for photography. KKBE is a Reform Jewish congregation and synagogue located on Hassel Street. Having founded the congregation in 1749, it is known as the first Reform synagogue located in the United States.

After family portraits, everyone went inside to prepare for the ceremony. Eva was radiant, and her smile lit up the entire sanctuary as she read from the Torah, marking an important milestone in her spiritual journey. The synagogue’s stunning architecture provided a gorgeous backdrop for heartfelt photos of this special day, capturing both intimate moments and lively celebrations. It was clear that Eva and Rabbi Alexander had a close connection. Several touching moments between student and rabbi, as well as between Eva and her parents, brought me close to tears. But when Eva and her little sister embraced after Nora helped her big sis cover the Torah, I lost it! There is nothing so touching as the love between two sisters.

Following the ceremony, we headed to the fellowship hall for a Kiddush lunch, where the atmosphere was full of love, laughter, and excitement. Guests gathered around tables laden with delicious traditional foods, sharing stories and creating memories. I loved documenting the candid interactions and joyful expressions that truly showcased the significance of this occasion for Eva and her family. It’s always a privilege to be part of such meaningful events.  And I’m grateful to have been able to preserve these precious memories for this wonderful family. Moments like these remind me why I love my job—celebrating faith, family, and community through my lens.

Later that evening, we all met for a fun reception at the Segra Club above The Joe! But that’s a story for another post…

Reeves Family Triplets Bar Matzvah

Capturing a Bar Mitzvah for triplets is a truly unique experience. Photographing this big day for Charlie, Evan, and Ray was no exception!

The day began with an intimate and meaningful service at the Synagogue Emanu-El, where each of the boys took part in the traditional readings. They all did an amazing job. It was clear how proud their parents were. The synagogue also providid a great setting for a number of individual and family portraits!

Afterward, we headed to the Daniel Island Country Club, where the celebration continued in grand style. The space was transformed into a vibrant, high-energy venue, thanks to the amazing work of Sha Sha from Loluma. She truly outdid herself with the details, from the fun photo booth to the kid’s lounge, and the bright, colorful decorations that reflected the boys’ personalities. Throughout the evening, DJ Neezy kept the party rockin’ and kept the energy flowing!

As an event photographer, it’s always a pleasure to capture moments of joy, laughter, and excitement—and there was no shortage of those at the Reeves Family Bar Mitzvah! Whether it was the kids playing games, candid shots of everyone dancing, the triplets being raised up during the Hora, family and friends sharing a laugh with each other, or the beautiful family portraits…this event was full of memories that will last a lifetime. This day was a true celebration of family, tradition, and fun!

Many thanks to Amanda & Josh for trusting me with capturing all the beautiful moments of this special day. Please help me in congratulating Charlie, Evan, and Ray!!!

Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue

Photographing a milestone event is always a special experience, but there’s something truly magical about documenting a Bar Mitzvah. Recently, I had the privilege of capturing the joy and traditions of Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah at the historic Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue. Between the vibrant family moments, the rich traditions, and the unique fusion of spirituality and fun…Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah truly was unforgettable.

The day began at the breathtaking Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue, a sacred space that has stood as a pillar of Jewish heritage for generations. As the natural light streamed through the stained glass windows, I captured candid moments of Ryan’s family and friends gathering to witness this rite of passage. The air was filled with a sense of reverence, as the young man embarked on his journey into adulthood. The ceremony itself was a beautiful blend of tradition and personal significance. Ryan flawlessly recited his Torah portion and shared reflections on the values he holds dear. The synagogue echoed with melodies of ancient prayers, creating an atmosphere of spirituality that resonated with everyone present. The emotion on Ryan’s face as he received blessings from family and community members was a testament to the significance of this milestone.

Later that evening, the atmosphere shifted as guests made their way to the Harborside East for the carnival-themed reception. The transformation was nothing short of magical – vibrant colors, whimsical decorations, and the lively energy of a carnival greeted everyone as they entered. From cotton candy stations to classic carnival games, the reception exuded an atmosphere of pure joy. As a photographer, capturing the exuberance of a carnival-themed celebration presented a delightful challenge. I documented the laughter and camaraderie as guests tried their luck at games, enjoyed delicious carnival treats, and danced to the beats of lively music. The eclectic mix of traditional Bar Mitzvah customs and the playful spirit of the carnival created a dynamic visual narrative that told the story of Ryan’s unique celebration.

Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah celebration at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue and the carnival-themed reception at Harborside East was a perfect blend of spirituality and festivity. The photographs captured not just moments frozen in time but a rich tapestry of tradition, joy, and the unbreakable bonds of family and community. It was an honor to be part of such a joyous occasion, and I’m grateful to have been a part of documenting these memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Many thanks to Sha Sha at Loluma for creating this magical narrative for me to document! And CONGRATULATIONS to Ryan!!! Well done, young man.

Max Bluestein’s Bar Mitzvah at Emanu-El Synagogue

As a professional photographer, it is always such a pleasure to capture important moments in people’s lives. Last weekend, I had the honor of photographing Max Bluestein’s Bar Mitzvah at the Emanu-El Synagogue, as well as the ensuing reception at Founder’s Hall in Charlestowne Landing. I must say that it was an experience I will never forget!

The Emanu-El Synagogue is a stunning location.  I was truly impressed by the beauty and the feeling of reverence of the place. The architecture, the lighting, and the ambiance of the synagogue were simply amazing. I was thrilled to have such a lovely location to capture these special moments for Max and his family. The décor was elegant and tasteful, with traditional elements that added to the spiritual significance of the event. You could tell that Rabbi Ravski had a special connection with the young man. It was heartwarming to see Max and his family come together to celebrate this special occasion!

After the Bar Mitzvah ceremony, the reception at Founder’s Hall was a joyous occasion. The hall was beautifully decorated by Sha Sha and her amazing team at Loluma. The food and drinks were exceptional. The fun activities and fantastic dancing went on all night long.  DJ Ede and Naquan kept everyone on their toes!  I loved seeing all the guests having such a wonderful time!

Many thanks to Rabbi Ravski at Emanu-El, Sha Sha and her team at Loluma, Michelle Metzler at Founder’s Hall, DJ Ede Moran and Naquan, Jenna at Cru Catering, Getem Twisted photo booths, Alpha Lit letters, Eventworcks, and everyone else who helped make this day a huge success! Also, a HUGE shout-out to Ryan, Sharyn, and Abby for loving and supporting Max through this special time in his life!!!

Capturing such special moments and memories for Max and his family was a great privilege for me. The beauty of the synagogue, the fun family portraits afterwards, and the exciting reception all made for such a memorable event. I felt truly blessed to have been a part of such a momentous occasion. CONGRATULATIONS, Max!!!

Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah

Shabat Shalom!

In spite of the challenges of the pandemic lockdown a few years ago, Jen & Gabe managed to pull off a beautiful and unique Bar Mitzvah for their oldest son, Jason. It was a touching experience for me personally. And I’m so glad I got to connect with this amazing family during that time. So it was a great honor when Jen & Gabe asked if I would photograph their youngest son’s Bar Mitzvah!

What a contrast a few short years makes!!! Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah was a totally different, but every bit as special an experience! Matthew is a thoughtful, kind, and charismatic young man, who also happens to have a truly gifted voice. His silky smooth vocals during the reading of the Torah, and leading the congregation in worship, resonated throughout the KKBE sanctuary. It truly was one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had the pleasure of photographing!

Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is located in downtown Charleston. Founded in 1749, this is the first Reform synagogue, and one of the oldest Jewish congregations in the United States! The founding members of the KKBE were Sephardi Jews of Spanish and Portuguese descent. The current 1841 synagogue, featuring an architecturally significant Greek Revival style, was built after the original synagogue was destroyed in a fire in 1838. The present structure is the second oldest synagogue building, and the oldest in continuous use, in the United States.

Later that evening, celebrations kicked into high gear at Hotel Indigo! With a “pre-party” for Matthew and his closest friends, cocktail hour for the adults, the family’s Grand Entrance to the reception, Motzi and challah, DJ Eddie cranking out tunes, Sir Andrew Larris and his dance crew keeping everyone on their feet, a wild and crazy Hora, a Party Boss photo booth, an ice cream sundae station, a glazed donut display, a candy bar, a cocoa-with-marshmallows extravaganza, and personalized sweatshirts for each of his friends…Matthew’s party was off the charts!!!

Many thanks to Rabbi Alexander and Rabbi Kanter for their leadership and guidance during Shabbat Terumah.  And a very special THANK YOU to Sha Sha at Loluma for making sure everything on the Big Day was absolutely perfect!

CONGRATULATIONS on this amazing milestone in your life, Matthew!!! We wish you all the best as you begin this new journey into adulthood…

Jason’s Bar Mitzvah at KKBE

After numerous ups and downs, twists and turns, uncertainty and doubt, Jason was finally able to pull of his incredible Bar Mitzvah last weekend!!!

It may not have been the big party they originally envisioned. But Jason’s amazing parents, Jen & Gabe, worked diligently to make his coming-of-age a very special one! After all, a man only turns 13 once in his life. And just because there’s a pandemic going on doesn’t mean time stands still! So this past weekend, Jason was finally able to assume his religious and legal obligations under Jewish law.

Jason’s celebration was held at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue, which was founded in 1749, and is one of the oldest Jewish congregations in the United States! It’s an absolutely stunning sanctuary that has recently undergone a beautiful renovation project.

In keeping with social distancing guidelines, only immediate family and grandparents were in attendants. However, a team of specialists were able to arrange it so that all Jason’s family and friends could still attend remotely. Even his Rabbi Stephanie Alexander and Music Minister Robin Shuler were present via the wonders of modern technology.

Many thanks to Sha Sha and her team at Loluma for making dreams come true.  Much appreciation goes to Mark Swick for opening the synagogue and making sure everything went smoothly.  As always, it was a pleasure to be working with my friend and incredible videographer, Ben Hough.  And a HUGE shout out to Jason’s brother, Matthew for his amazing performance during the ceremony!

Congratulations and mazel tov, Bar Mitzvah!!!  You are an INCREDUBLE human being, Jason!  I can’t wait to see what great things you will accomplish in your future.
