High-Key Headshots for Bridge Commercial

I photograph high-key headshots for a lot of firms in Charleston. That clean, modern, all-white background just seems to be a popular choice for many companies. Plus it’s also an easy background to knock out in Photoshop if your marketing team wants to change the background to something else. I know the Rosen Hagood law firm does that with all the high-key portraits I shoot for them.

Periodically, companies will switch up their marketing or change their web-design, and ask me for a different background to go with their new “look”. But I’ve been working with Bridge Commercial for probably over a decade and they just continue to love the simple and elegant look of the high-key background. What’s not to like?!?

The key to lighting a high-key portrait is the background light. If you don’t light the background separately from the subject, even the whitest background will still come out looking dull. That’s because of the inverse square law of light. As you can see in my setup, I’ve got two speedlights on the left-side stand as my main light, which is Group A. I’ve got one speedlight on the right-side stand as my fill light, which is Group B. The power ratios in both groups are about the same. But having one speedlight instead of two naturally gives me half the amount of light, providing a pleasing ratio between the highlights and the shadows on my subject. Finally, I’ve got one speedlight on the stand behind the subject, aimed at the center of the background. The ratio on this light is double the others because I want the background to be nice and bright.

Bridge Commercial Headshots

It’s been an honor to work with Bridge Commercial over the last decade or so.

Yesterday I had the privilege of photographing updated headshots for them. The scheduling was prompted because they had just hired Morgan, the latest member of their growing team. But of course we opened the shoot up to anyone who wanted an updated headshot. Several folks came down for updates because they have a different hair style, lost some weight, etc. What a great pleasure it was to see Executive Vice President Hagood come down for an update! Hagood was one of the first people I photographed for the firm!!! He hasn’t changed much…just a little grayer and wiser like me. HA!

Many thanks to Kennedy for organizing everyone’s schedules and making this happen.

Headshots for Bridge Commercial

It was a dreary day outside…steady rain for hours. But I had a fun time inside with some very cheerful clients!

Setting up a white high-key backdrop, a Nikon Z9, and several speedlights, I had a great time photographing several new members to the Bridge Commercial Real Estate team! Photos were transmitted instantly to my laptop, where they got to pick out their favorites.

Many thanks to Kennedy for always being so organized, and for getting everyone’s schedules lined up!

High-Key Headshots

I had a great time this morning photographing headshots for some new team members at Bridge Commercial!

I fired an SB-5000 flash onto the white backdrop to create a super-clean high-key look. The main light consisted of 2 SB-5000 flashes firing into a 60″ Westcott umbrella. The fill light was another 60″ Westcott umbrella with 1 SB-5000 in it. I used Manfrotto supports for the camera and speedlights. The camera of choice was a D5 with 70-200 f2.8 VRII, shooting tethered to my Lenovo laptop, set at ISO 400, f5.6,  and 1/200 sec.

Fun Day at The Office

Today was a fun “Day at The Office”. Well, technically, the world is my office…HA! But today I had the privilege of photographing headshots for new team members at Bridge Commercial.  I set everything up in their lobby.  So each person just had to slip away from their desk for about 10 minutes. I always enjoy working with this wonderful company!

High-Key Headshots for Bridge Commercial

A few days ago I had the privilege of meeting Alex. Alex is the newest member of the amazing team of commercial real-estate agents at Bridge Commercial. He moved to Charleston a couple months ago from his home in Florida. He’s excited to be joining one of the most respected firms in Charleston, and start this new chapter in his life!

Setting up in the lobby, I set up a white backdrop and created a high-key look by lighting the fabric with a single Nikon SB-5000 flash. I then created a nice soft main light by firing 2 SB-5000 flashes into a large 60″ Westcott shoot-through umbrella just out of frame on camera left. And I added a little fill light by firing another SB-5000 flash through a second 60″ umbrella just to the right of the camera. All stands and tripods were by Manfrotto. I selected the Nikon D5 and Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VRII to shoot with. The camera was tethered to a Lenovo Yoga laptop for instant previews so that Alex could pick out his favorite.

It was a pleasure meeting and photographing Alex. I look forward to seeing great things from this young man!
