Jaime & Brian’s Hampton Park Engagement Session

Earlier this summer I got this really sweet email from Jaime:

“Hey Chris! I recently just got engaged and wanted to talk to you. You did my best friends wedding a few years ago and the pictures were so beautiful…”

I’ve had so much fun getting to know Jaime over the past few months. Finally, I got to meet this very special couple over the weekend when they came to Charleston for their engagement session. Jaime is the sweetest, kindest, most beautiful person you could ever meet! Plus, Brian and I hit it off immediately because we share the same quirky sense of humor. We all had a BLAST exploring the picturesque Hampton Park, capturing their excitement and energy along the way.

I’d like to send a HUGE BEAR HUG to Melissa & Kevin, who’s gorgeous wedding I photographed at Middleton Place, for re-connecting Jaime and I after all these years. šŸ™‚Ā  I can’t wait to photograph Jaime & Brian’s amazing celebration in Woodstock, GA next year!!!

Lawson’s Senior Portraits

Lawson is an incredibly smart, kind, and beautiful young lady! Her easy-going personality and naturally quiet demeanor has a calming effect on everyone around her. And when that infectious smile bursts out, you can’t help but be happy inside! Lawson plays golf on her high-school team, and is hoping to study law when she goes to college.

Yesterday I had a really fun mentoring session with my friends Geno and Tyler. They were kind enough to teach me how to fly their drones. So I returned the favor by sharing some photography tips. Lawson was kind enough to accept the challenge of being our super model for the afternoon as we worked on our techniques. What a brave girl!!! šŸ˜‰

We started our fun fashion shoot off at Hampton Park…later progressing to Brittlebank Park for the sunset. It was a gorgeous day, and Lawson was absolutely STUNNING!!! It was an honor and a pleasure to capture some creative Senior Portraits for this amazing young lady!

Speedlight Sunset

I love photographing on overcast days. The light is soft, the colors are saturated, and the subjects don’t squint as much. But sometimes the images come out a little flat and lack impact…kinda just blah. Fortunately, I have a great little tip to keep all the benefits of the soft natural light, but add a little extra POP back into the image.

Here’s a little technique I call “Speedlight Sunset”. My preferred setup is to work with 2 or 3 speedlights mounted together on my home-made triple-threat flash bracket. Having multiple flashes ganged together provides me with extra power, directionality, and versatility when needed. But you can definitely do this with just one speedlight as well.

Instead of using your wireless off-camera flash as a fill or main light, place it far back behind your subject in the corner of the frame. For best effect, I try to have it shining through a background element like some low-hanging leaves or a clump of Spanish moss. This serves to obscure the true source of the light, and also defuse the quality of the light so that it looks more like the real thing. For best effect, you should also add a CTO gel over the flash. Also known as Color Temperature Orange, this piece of plastic changes the color of the light source to a deep warm tone, like that of a setting sun.

I prefer to trigger my wireless off-camera flashes with radio waves. Nikon’s built in Creative Lighting System is free and will do the job up to a certain distance as long as the Master flash and the Remote flash can see each other. But to place your flash further distances away, or hide it behind leaves and trees, you’ll need a radio triggering system. I sometimes use RadioPoppers to trigger my older Nikon SB-800 flashes. PocketWizard is another great solution that’s out there. But with the new Nikon D5 (as in this case) and Nikon D500 cameras, I can remotely trigger my Nikon SB-5000 flashes via the built-in AWL (Advanced Wireless Technology). I just plug in the WR-R10 Remote Controller, and away we go!

Many thanks to Kelli and Tom for being so much fun to work with on their beautiful maternity shoot. Ā Check out more of their images and see more samples of this Speedlight Sunset at: Ā https://chrisandcami.com/kelli-tom-at-hampton-park/.

I hope this helps open up some ideas and possibilities for taking your images to the next level. Speedlights are small, light, and portable. But they can make a HUGE difference in the quality and creativity of your images!

Kelli & Tom at Hampton Park

I just about did back-flips in my office when I got this email from Kelli, one of my all-time-favorite brides:

“Hey Chris!! Hope all is well! So… from taking family pictures when I was 12 years old… to engagement… to wedding pictures… and now I want to ask if you wouldn’t mind doing maternity pictures?” šŸ™‚

After tons of planning and adjusting, the day of the big photo shoot finally arrived. Kelli & Tom (and little baby Peyton) met up with me at Hampton Park. We had a gorgeous morning with wonderful soft light to work with. It was so much fun catching up with these two as we wandered around the beautiful grounds, capturing gorgeous images to preserve this special time in their lives.

Kelli & Tom have big plans ahead…moving to a new city, opening a new restaurant, and now…starting their new family. We couldn’t be happier for these two. CONGRATULATIONS Kelli & Tom! You guys are going to be the best parents ever!!!

Bible Family at Hampton Park

Hampton Park is Charleston’s largest public park. It boasts an extensive floral display, giant live-oaks, long tree-lined avenues, a beautiful gazebo, and a wonderful duck pond that’s always teaming with activity. It’s no wonder this is one of my favorite locations for family portrait sessions!

This morning, I met up with the AMAZING Bible Family, who are all down here from Ohio celebrating Roger & Sara’s 50th Anniversary!Ā  The last couple days of rain cleared up just in time for us to have a lovely morning with refreshingly cool temperatures. We all had a great photo shoot, and captured some really funny moments. Isn’t that what family is all about?!? šŸ™‚

Many thanks to Kim for all her hard work coordinating this crazy crew! And thanks to everyone for making me feel part of the family!!!

Kellerman Family at Hampton Park

3) Photograph their new son Kai’s portrait session at Hampton Park

I can’t wait to see what Part 4 brings! Ā šŸ™‚

Thomas Family at Hampton Park

After photographing Riley’s newborn photos a year ago, it was so much fun cathcing up with the Thomas Family for her 1-Year Photo Shoot at Hampton Park!!! Riley is an absolute DOLL with a smile that will melt your heart! It’s no surprise since she has some of the coolest parents ever, gets a play date with her amazing aunt every week, and spends lots of time with her beautiful grandmother too! šŸ™‚

Byars Family at Hampton Park

My last family shoot before Christmas Break came on Christmas Eve day.

I met up with Kathryn & Brent’s family at Hampton Park, just in time for the light to turn beautiful, soft, and golden. Their three adorable girls were a real treat! We had so much fun laughing and shooting that I completely lost track of time. šŸ™‚

Not only were they a wonderful family, but Kathryn is an amazing photographer in her own right! Check out her beautiful work at Kathryn Arvanitis Photography.

As we take a short break from shooting to go and visit with our families, Cami and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Abby’s Senior Portraits

I can’t even believe that “Little Abby” is all grown up!!!

Last night, in a gorgeous evening, at picturesque Hampton Park, we photographed Abby’s Senior Portraits. It was so much fun catching up with her life, and hearing about her passions for music, animals, and our planet.

CONGRATULATIONS, Abby! You have grown up to be such a kind, loving, talented, thoughtful, and beautiful young lady. I know you make your parents very proud!!!

Gillis Family at Hampton Park

It just doesn’t get any cuter than a 2 year old chasing ducks in the park!!! šŸ™‚

Photographing Erin and her extended family over the years has been such a joy to me. From photographing Erin as a girl, to covering her beautiful wedding with Rette, and now coming full circle in photographing THEIR daughter…it’s just such an honor to be a part of this family’s life!

Saylor is absolutely adorable! I was cracking up at all the crazy expressions she has in her repertoir. Congratulations Erin & Rette…you got yourselves a keeper!!!

Lindsay & Tracy at Hampton Park

It’s been such an honor and a joy photographing Lindsay & and her beautiful daughter, Hannah, over the years. This year, they took it to the next level by sharing their new EXPANDED family with me!!! šŸ™‚

It was a pleasure meeting Tracy and his girls, Hannah (#2) and Catelynn. I love that they picked Hampton Park for their photo shoot. It’s one of my favorite places in town!

We all had so much fun together! CONGRATULATIONS Lindsay & Tracy…you guys ROCK!!! šŸ™‚
