Credit One Charleston Open – Day 9

It was another EXCITING year for me to be covering the Credit One Charleston Open!!!

Since 1973, the Charleston Open has been a pioneer in women’s professional sports, creating milestones that over the years have directly influenced the popularity of women’s professional tennis. Much has changed over the years. But to this day, the tournament remains the largest women’s only tennis tournament in North America. This year’s roster included 5 of the Top 10 women on tour, 5 past champions, and 5 Grand Slam champions. Previous winners include notable names like Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams, Tracy Austin, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Nadia Petrova, Madison Keys…and so many more!

Although it started out cold and overcast, the rain had passed in time for our Sunday Finals. As the competition heated up on center court, so did the weather. By the time the dust from the iconic green clay had settled, the sun was back out, and the Credit One Charleston Open had a NEW CHAMPION!!! After 9 looong days of non-stop mayhem, constantly shooting and editing for 10-15 hours per day, another tournament was in the books. But before we could wrap things up and go home, I had the pleasure of photographing a private shoot with our new victor, Ons Jabeur. It was a particularly special moment for me since Ons is the most successful professional tennis player to come out of Africa. She was born in Tunisia. I was born in Zaire.  So we share that common bond of having African dust on our feet and African roots in our hearts.

CONGRATULATIONS to Ons as she continues to break barriers and win fans with her genuine smile and gentle spirit!!!

Semi-finals Saturday was plagued with thunderstorms on and off all day. So I managed to capture a few behind-the-scenes shots of the Media Center and some of the members of media in action.  But somehow, by the end of the night, we were able get in some electrifying tennis!

With bad weather predicted for the weekend, Day 7 seemed to have an added urgency for getting great photos of the action on Credit One Stadium, fans having fun around the grounds, autograph sessions, TV appearances at the Tennis Channel desk, and VIP suite visits!  Plus I got to photograph the trophy sitting proudly on center court.  🙂

Credit One Charleston Open – Day 6

It was another EXCITING year for me to be covering the Credit One Charleston Open!!!

By Day 6, the player field is getting narrowed down. That gave me more time to capture the subtle nuances of each match…plus I could slip in more shots of fans, press conferences, TV appearances, autograph sessions, and VIP suite visits. Oh, and I finally had time to capture a few shots with the drone!

Day 3 was the first round of the main draw, featuring some AMAZING singles and doubles action. The stands were packed! Plus there were a ton of great autograph sessions and player interviews for fans to enjoy. The ball kids got a private meeting (and group photo) with Storm Hunter.  And Sloan Stephens made a VIP appearance after her win!!!

After 2 days of qualifying rounds, the tournament welcomes all the main draw players, as well as those who made it through qualies, to a wonderful Player Party before the competition begins. This year’s Player Party was held at the historic Riviera Theater!

Charleston Charm in Infrared

After shooting a small wedding at White Point Garden yesterday, I decided it was too nice an afternoon not to go for a walk around charming downtown Charleston.
We put away the “heavy stuff” and I grabbed my lightweight Coolpix A that I had converted to see infrared light by Kolari Vision. I did a video about this camera and what I had done to it if anyone is interested in converting an old camera to infrared: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FsuIRK90wY&t=21s.

Being the last day of the South Eastern Wildlife Expo, there were a lot of tourists along The Battery. So I threaded my way through Stolls Alley, up to Tradd Street, and down the less-traveled parts of the old historic district.

Magnolia Plantation in Infrared

Work is good. Busy is good. But occasionally when I shoot too many assignments in a row and don’t have enough room to “breathe”, I feel my creativity getting stifled. It’s during those times that taking an afternoon off for a hike around Magnolia Plantation with nothing but my infrared camera can feel like a brilliant breath of fresh air!!!

Photographing from the Sky

Since becoming FAA Certified for commercial drone photography, I haven’t had as many opportunities to go flying as I used to.  I can accomplish most of my aerial photography requests with the drone. But last week I had an assignment for Trident Construction that was going to require flying above 400 ft, and flying too near the Charleston International Airport…both of which were beyond the legal limits of commercial drone flight.

So I reached out to Hayden and Kris at Holy City Helicopters. Hayden is not only a great chopper pilot, but also an avid photographer. So he “got it” when it came to waiting for the right weather and the right light. Finally, a beautiful blue-sky day opened up to us! Kris was my pilot that morning.  He did a fantastic job of getting me good angles of the projects I needed to photograph.

It was a pleasure flying and photographing with these fine gentlemen. I highly recommend calling Hayden if you’re interested in photographing from the sky!

Charleston Photographers Lunch Group

The Charleston Photographers Lunch Group is a fun, friendly, casual group of fellow photographers who share a common passion and enjoy getting together to exchange ideas, talk about the latest toys and techniques, build community, and develop friendships with others of like mind and spirit.

We meet for lunch once a month, on different days of the week, at different restaurants all over town. Throughout the year, different members take turns volunteering to organize and host each month’s lunch.

This is not a formal “organization”. There are no crazy fees or silly rules. It’s just a bunch of friends getting together who happen to LOVE photography. We check our egos at the door and come prepared to share openly, encourage graciously, and connect positively with one another. The range of folks that attend are everywhere from Pulitzer Prize nominated photojournalists to part-timers and hobbyists.

Like most things in life, what you get out of the group is directly proportional to what you put into it. I hope you enjoy this video and find many lasting friendships within the group!
