Fine-Tune your Focus

Professional level cameras like the Nikon D3 and D300 that I use have the ability for fine-tuning the focus parameters of each lens.  I just spent all day yesterday re-calibrating every lens to every camera body combination.  It was a chore.  But now all my glass will be at peak sharpness as we head into wedding season.  J

I need to do that. Were you putting 1/3 of the sharp hashmarks in front of and 2/3 behind your point of focus when adjusting? I guess I need to RTFM. :-)

Alex, that is a good rule of thumb as to how the depth of field falls when an object is in focus. But when calibrating your lenses, you need to shoot them wide open. At that shallow a depth, you simply want the absolute tac-sharp pinpoint to be on the actual hash-mark you're focused on. Do that and the rest will fall into place. Have fun!
